Black Bear Pass connects the Colorado mountain towns of Ouray and Telluride. The trail reaches 12,840′ above sea level at the top of the pass, then descends an off-camber section of loose shale ledges known as the steps, and goes around narrow switchbacks that require three point turns to negotiate as it descends several thousand feet into Telluride below. The trail is beautiful and not very technical, but drivers must give this trail their full attention because a simple mistake can be fatal.
